When considering facial rejuvenation, understanding the difference between a deep plane facelift and a traditional facelift is essential. Both techniques aim to restore a more youthful appearance, but they do so in distinct ways, each suited to different patient needs and aesthetic goals.

What Is a Traditional Facelift?
A traditional facelift typically focuses on tightening the skin and repositioning the superficial muscle layer, known as the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System). While this technique can provide excellent results, especially in the lower face and jawline, it may create a tighter appearance if not performed with precision. Traditional SMAS facelift allows separation of the direction of lift of the skin and the underlying muscle which can be important where there is important when there is significant skin laxity.

Traditional facelifts are therefore suitable for patients with moderate or heavy skin laxity and jowling, offering a refined and refreshed look with a relatively straightforward recovery.

What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?
The deep plane facelift goes further by releasing and repositioning the deeper facial layers beneath the SMAS, including the tissues that support the cheeks and midface. This approach allows for a more significant lift and natural restoration of volume, particularly in the midface area. In the deep plane facelift, skin and muscle, layers are advanced together in a composite manner.

Results tend to look softer and more natural and often last longer than those achieved with a traditional facelift.
