Jowl Lift Surgery | Jonathan Britto Clinic
Jowl Lift surgery begins with careful analysis of facial anatomy, function, proportion and the changes that matter to the individual patient.
At the Jonathan Britto Clinic, the emphasis is on evidence-based excellence, layer-by-layer analysis and a natural result that remains individual to the patient. Here are ten of the questions people commonly ask when researching this procedure in London.
A jowl lift is a term commonly used for surgery designed to improve loss of definition along the lower face and jawline. Jowls develop as facial tissues descend and the youthful transition from cheek to jaw becomes less distinct. Rather than simply tightening skin, Jonathan analyses the deeper facial layers and their relationship with the neck.
Jowling is produced by a combination of ageing changes including soft tissue descent, ligamentous change, loss or redistribution of facial volume, skin laxity and changes in the underlying facial skeleton. Genetics also influence when and how jowls appear. Effective treatment therefore depends on identifying the dominant anatomical cause.
Facelift surgery can substantially improve jowls when they are caused by descent of the lower facial tissues. The operation repositions the deeper structures and restores a sharper, more defined jawline rather than relying on skin tension alone. The degree of improvement depends on anatomy and tissue quality.
The jawline and neck are closely related. Some patients have predominantly lower-face descent, while others have significant neck laxity, platysmal change or fullness beneath the chin. Jonathan assesses the face and neck together and may recommend a facelift, necklift or combined approach to maintain harmony.
Non-surgical treatments can offer improvement in selected patients with early changes, but they cannot reproduce the structural repositioning possible with surgery. Adding volume indiscriminately may sometimes make a heavy lower face appear fuller rather than more defined. Treatment should follow anatomical diagnosis.
The objective is the opposite. Natural lower-face rejuvenation restores shape and definition while allowing normal expression. Jonathan’s approach is based on repositioning appropriate deeper layers rather than applying excessive tension to the skin.
Where a facelift approach is used, incisions are usually designed around the ear and adjacent hairline. Exact placement varies according to anatomy and the operation planned. The aim is for scars to mature discreetly while avoiding distortion of the ear or hairline.
Recovery depends on the extent of lower-face surgery and whether neck or other facial procedures are combined. Bruising, swelling, tightness and temporary altered sensation are normal early features. Social confidence returns progressively as swelling settles, while the final refinement takes longer.
Surgical correction is long-lasting, although ageing continues. Skin quality, facial structure, lifestyle and genetics all influence longevity. Surgery effectively changes the anatomical starting point from which the lower face continues to age.
There is no ideal age. The decision is based on anatomy, the degree of tissue descent, health and how much the concern affects the patient, rather than a birthday. Some people develop jowls earlier through genetics, while others retain jawline definition much later.

Your journey begins with a conversation. Let us take the first step together.
The journey begins with the analysis phase, which is your opportunity to get to know us and our opportunity to welcome you, inform you and understand what you want to achieve.
There will be information that you want from us and information that we need from you. The more complete and comprehensive this is, the better the results will be.
We aim to build trust so that we can be open with each other about your goals, the indications for treatment and the alternatives available. This allows you to carefully consider the balance of risks, responsibilities, recovery and expected outcomes.
As part of our holistic philosophy, we will also offer you a complimentary lifestyle medical plan called Prepare and Repair. This includes guidance on how to optimise your health before surgery and support your recovery afterwards.
